DISTRIBUTION

Tonga constitute 81 per cent, of the population of the district of west Nyasa, 5∙9 per cent, of Kotakota, and 4–3 per cent, of Kasungu.5 The distribution of the total Tonga population in these districts is as follows: West Nyasa 87 per cent. (48,546); Kotakota 7 per cent. (3,921); Kasungu 3 per cent. (1,874).

DEMOGRAPHY

In 1931 the Tonga numbered 55,835, but in 1945 their numbers had fallen to 50,359. This decrease of 5,476 in the inter-censal period (when every other tribe except the Ngoni had shown an increase) is considered to be a serious matter, and is attributed to the high rate of labour migration.6 The 1936 Medical Report gives in an appendix the results of a survey of health conditions in the district. The general lack of stamina of the population is caused partly by the high rate of infection from parasitic and venereal diseases, and partly by the poor diet of cassava, resulting from the decline in agriculture due to the absence of so many young adult men.7 Vital statistics reflect the same trends : the percentage of infants in the 0–1 age-group to the total population is 5∙9—a figure which is lower than that for any other district in Nyasaland, the average rate over8 the whole territory being 8∙6 per cent.
